The 1st Marine Division set up camp at Camp Lejeune in September 1941. Since then units have come to train and deployed around the globe to fight wars. Today, Camp Lejeune covers about 246 square miles, with 14 miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean. Included on the base are more than 400 miles of roads, 6,500 buildings and facilities. |

Services aboard the base include child care, shopping, education, and family support. Recreational activities include 2 eighteen hole golf courses, 3 marinas, hunting & fishing, dining, and swimming. Facilities include banks & credit unions, commissary, library, hobby shops, fitness centers, the beach, theater and more. All in all, the base and surrounding community is home to an active duty, family member, retiree and civilian population of nearly 150,000.
There are several major Marine Corps commands and one Navy command aboard Camp Lejeune.
